Description

Feedback is an interactive installation that aims to encourage performance from members of the public and circus performers alike. Using the familiar form of a mirror, the installation uses cutting-edge computer vision techniques to allow users to remix their bodies in real time, and display them on a large scale over the interior and exterior of the Roundhouse in Camden.
By dancing, performing – or even modestly gesturing in front of the screen, the installation will capture the movement of anyone interacting with it to create a graphic animation of their body movements.
The effect is similar to that of a “Hall of Mirrors”, generating an unexpected and magical wobbly, bendy or stretched reflection.

There are three modes to the interactive mirror. Feedback mode, where as the user move slices of the video are captured and then playback with a delay. Shatter mode, allows the user to break there motion in to pieces. As they dance, jump or gesture at the screen the application isolates those regions and shatters them like glass. The last mode is spray, where as you move you paint with the colors of the video. Particles will spray in the direction of your motion.

Initial Prototype

Since using xcode 4 I have lost all my nice settings for xcode 3. Like in Processing I love the &#8984 t command to format your code. Here is how to setup at hot-key for xcode 4;

1. open up xcode
2. goto xcode->Preferences… or &#8984,
3. click on the tab Key Bindings
4. scroll to the “Editor Menu for Source Code” tab

5. the Command “Re-Indent” will auto indent your code by default is ^| this is a bit hard to type so it might be nice to make something else. I like ?T but that is bound to another key. I set mine to ⌘;

Zach Lieberman and I held an ofLab in the Netherlands for the graphic design festival, GDFB. The lab was centered around the intersection of visual design and custom software. Participants developed new tools for programmers and designers – with the final output to print. The work was then exhibited at one of the festivals galleries. Watch the documentation video created by the GDFB.

Zach Lieberman and I hosted a panel at SXSW on Openframeworks. The audience was a mix of artists, designers and programmers. Most of the talks at SXSW interactive were about internet privacy and social networking, so I was interested to see how people would react to our panel. We opened with a introduction to OF and then went into some projects that Zach and I have worked on. There was a very positive reaction from the talk which led to a mini workshop afterward. I really enjoyed the time in Austin and hope to do it again.
The current issue of Contagious Magazine did an article on Research and Development, which included the Lab. They talked about agencies creating an R&D initiative, a space/mentality for free thinking, fast prototyping, and experimentation. This idea of R&D will be part of the creative process.

Recently apple released a job posting for a User Interface Designer / Prototyper. It was amazing to see that required skills listed were Openframeworks and Processing. Evan a large company like Apple see the need for this new way of creative thinking.

I also noticed that the Magazine featured the Night Lights project. This is a piece I did with yesyesno in New Zealand a few months ago.

Description

This is a project done in collaboration with YesYesNo. The goal was to turn the historic Ferry Building in downtown Auckland New Zealand into a giant interactive playground.

We used 3 different types of interaction – body interaction on the two stages, hand interaction above a light table, and phone interaction with the tracking of waving phones. There were 6 scenes, cycled every hour for the public. The whole experience lasted 6 nights.

Monsters

The monster scene was a full body interaction – as people danced in front of light boxes their contours would magically transform into a playful monster. As groups of people came together they created giant monsters. see more monsters here

Ferns

This scene is another full body interaction – as people made growing gestures a fern would spawn from their contour. Throughout the scene colorful butterflies would flock toward peoples bellies.

Paint

This scene allowed people to finger paint on the entire building.

Constellations

This scene generated large constellations from the motion of people’s cellphones. The more movement people made caused stars to spill from the building.

Here are some more attempts to create a generative stipple filter. The idea here is to find the outlines of shapes in the image. I think that I can use this data to create bounds for particles and stipple points.

Been doing some testing to find the flow of pixels in portraits. Above are a few attempts to find vectors in pixels based on surrounding pixels. In video this is achieved by simple comparing current frames to previous frames then calculating the velocity of the different pixels. Here I want to find the general flow of pixels through the image. The goal is to then have particles stream through the image to generate a representation of the image, some type of generative stipple drawing.

My friend Kyle has a built an app the tweets every 140 charters he types twitter.com/keytweeter. I thought this was interesting so I built an app to pull his twitter down and visualize the most popular key. Unfortunately twitter only allows you to go 3200 tweets back via paging. So the picture about is Kyle’s last 3200 tweets. Looks like E is the popular letter. I could have just wikied it but this was much more fun.

I just ran the app on just numbers interesting results. Its very linear with zero being the most popular.

Just finished a project with Ryan and Brad for the MassDOT developers challenge. They release data of the card swipes for a 24 hour period. The three of us in about 5 days created posters visualizing the trains traffic on all the MBTA lines. The conference was yesterday and we ended up winning second place. Read more about the project here.

The project was a collaborative effort between:
Todd Vanderlin
Ryan Habbyshaw
Brad Simpson

Description

This project was a collaboration between Ryan Habbyshaw, Brad Simpson, and Todd Vanderlin. We began the project seven days ago when we learned of the competition and developed it from initial ideas to the final foldable posters within the week. Below is a brief description of the process of parsing, sorting, visualizing, and composing the final posters.

The subway data from August 12, 2009 was parsed in openFrameworks and Matlab using custom applications. Statistical analysis was performed in Matlab for subway loading (temporal and geographical including the entire MBTA, individual lines, and individual stations), rate of subway activity, and associated data. openFrameworks was used to generate the central visualizations for the project. Programs were written to interpret data that was processed into several arrangements to emphasize different trends within the data. Linear charts were used to display the activity of stations on a given line to show the geographic relation of activity throughout the course of the day. Circular 24-hour clocks for individual lines and stations were made in order to see the relative activity throughout the day. Pie charts were used to visualize rush hour commutes on each line, showing the contrast of activity during morning and evening rush hours. Histograms were used to show the breakdown of daily activity in a linear fashion. Layouts were done in Illustrator and visualizations were combined in order to create the five individual MBTA line posters and overall MBTA poster. Individual print posters are 33in x 23 in.

Finally got normals working for the height map. Brad helped me a ton with the math, thanks brad :). After making sure I had the right points its was pretty simple.

Here is an example to calculate normals for a grid in OpenFrameworks. Obviously this can be applied to any other language.

The image above we have four points on a plane. We need three of those points:

ofxVec3f p1(x1, y1, z1);
ofxVec3f p2(x2, y2, z2);
ofxVec3f p3(x3, y3, z3);

We now need a vector from p1 to p2 and p1 to p3.

ofxVec3f v1 = p1 - p2;
ofxVec3f v2 = p1 - p3;

We need the cross product of v1 and v2. This will give us our normal vector. Next we normalize that vector scale it and add p1.

ofxVec3f normalVec = v1.cross(v2);
normalVec.normalize();
normalVec *= 50.0;
normalVec += p1;

Now render from p1 to normal vector.

ofSetColor(255, 0, 0);
glVertex3f(normalVec.x, normalVec.y, normalVec.z);
glVertex3f(p1.x, p1.y, p1.z);

Just made this little app for fun. Its a classic fun house mirror where it splits the video up into four squares. I wanted to try and make a way to post the images in realtime to a database from the app. I had a ton of trouble with embedding a java applet that uses video, applet signing argg. The applet also makes a ajax call to load the new photo you just made. The page is a bit buggy, but try it out. For the best results just download the app and make some fun psychedelic art hehe.

Check it out here

I built a simple little app for Ryan to build piles of particles with applied physics. After creating desired grouping he could then export a vector file for composting in a illustration. I started to play around with the app and bringing it into to Illustrator, this lead me to ExtendScript. This reminded me of scriptographer awhile back but way more stable. Basically with ExtendScript you have complete control of the abode Suite. I did some simple little test with the swatch pallet. I went through every item in the document an colored it based on the size using the swatches in my pallet. This was a ton of fun especially when using Kuler. My friend Drew is doing a ton of amazing work with ExtendScript and OF. He has some great tutorials on his site. Here are some of my outputs.
Some people from LiftVisual came by with their 360 LED sign. It was really amazing with just two bars of leds it was able to display a super bright, clear RGB image. After I little bit of understanding how the system was working I was able to start coding for it. Using OF I was sending the display commands. I think with just a bit more time, I can get it to read a video feed. Some photos here.

Just finished a project for Evan Roth and the Fondation Cartier. Evan currently has an exhibit, Graffiti Taxonomy at the Fondation Cartier in Paris.

"Graffiti Taxonomy is a graffiti-based study in which characters are isolated from a collection of graffiti tags that were photographed in the same geographic region."

I built a tag visualizer for all of the graffiti photos taken for the study. The visualizer show the relationships between the letters within the tags. You can investigate the letter down to its location in the original photograph. The project was a blast to work on. The exhibit looks amazing, congratulations Evan!

Flashbelt was great ! First off Minneapolis was one a huge surprise. I imagined it to be an old boring city with not much to offer, but it was everything but that. The city had amazing art, great music, and the friendliest people, Acadia Bar was my favorite. The first night their was a projection party that was totally unexpected, check out the video here. We even played bocce ball representing OF oh course.

The conference was great, there was a good turn out. I was a bit worried about my talk was not being about flash but people really seamed to enjoy it. Joel and I tried to represent OF the best we could. It was quiet funny almost every talk mentioned OF in some way, its really exciting to see the community getting larger.

I am going to post more things that I talk about here, but most of the code that I showed is available here.

Everyone at the event was so nice, I made some great friends and can’t wait to hangout again. The talent was unreal, the minds and talks were great. I hope to do it again. Thanks Dave Schroeder for all the help and hospitality.

I’m going to talk about design and technology and the projects that come out when the two are combined. I will show examples of computer vision tracking and my exploration of haar training / detection. I will talk about openframeworks and its amazing extensibility and power. If you are in the area, please come check it out, its going to be a blast!

I was playing around with some AR markers the other day and came up with this idea. taking just a plain old vinyl record and attaching an AR marker to the label you can track the record in 3D space. The next question was, can you scratch the record? So by figuring out the velocity of the records rotation and applying it to the payback of the audio you can scratch. There is some digital noise that needs to bee worked out, but sounds pretty good. Its still really hard to scratch, it takes some practice but is super fun. The next step is to figure out some nice triggers for different modes. I like the idea of not needing a turntable but the actual spinning of the record helps with the scratching and playback. I made a couple modes, one where the record is paused and you can just scratch through the song. The other looks for zero velocity for x time and then continues on with the song. If there is velocity you then are scratching and the audio is affected. I think that this project has some legs can't wait to play more. more photos

I wanted to create a shape within the contour so I used delaunay triangulation. This returned all the triangles that build up the convex hull of the points. This was great but I only wanted the triangles inside the contour. Theo gave me a really great inside polygon test which solved this. I made sure that the center of each triangle was inside the contour. I think this will work if I create static shapes that build up the contour. Zach also had a great idea to check to see if the shape is inside the polygon. I could built a contact listener that checks to see if its inside and if so remove.

I used box2d to create a shape out of the contour of the body. There are still some some bugs that I’m trying to work out. Initially the shapes were only colliding with the interior of the contour but simple reversing the points solved that. Some shapes are still being push through but I think I have some ideas to solve this, maybe create fixed shapes inside the contour. Despite the somewhat slow playback of the video due to snapzpro the speed is great. More to come.

Working on some plant creatures. The vines are built using box2d and springs. They are really flexible but seem to collapse upon eachother, it turns into a mess. I would like to built up the structure of the vines with box2d segments but I can’t figure out a way to build simple lines that change dimensions, go figure. I know that chipmunk can do this but want to figure out a way to do this with box2d.

Description

The interactive aquarium is installed in store front windows in 6 cities across the US. Using computer vision the seascape will react to the motion of a user, seaweed will sway and fish will scatter. Users can then dial in with any mobile device and create a fish using their voice. As they connect in realtime the sounds they make are analyzed and create a dynamically generated fish. You can then enter that fish into the aquarium and use your key pad to eat various pieces of fish food that will transform and morph your fish into creatures. The application will remember the state of your fish so that when you call back later you can evolve your fish even further.

Technical

The installation was setup in two situations an HD rear projection and a LCD wall. The vision technology was able to track motion and trigger animations. The phone technology was built using megaphone a realtime multiuser mobile phone server.

I’m working on a project were I load every image from my computer and average the pixels. I want to find the universal pixel and image of the computer. In my head I thought this would would be a very interesting set of colors. For instance if you were a photographer you would have a very beautiful array of color. But is you were an accountant your color array would be bland. In my first test I average all the pixels in iPhoto and blaaa, its brown, what a bummer, nothing pretty. I have some other ideas, hope I can find something interesting.
